Stefan Marthaler,
born 1968

After the apprenticeship as draughtsman, I acquired my photographic knowledge in the group of autodidactic photographers (GAF). In 1995, I started as independent photographer and afterwards incorporated a studio alliance together with two other photographers in Worb (BE Switzerland).
Since 1999, I am an active member of the ‘Young Photo Professionals’ (youngpp), where I also perform as a member of to the board of managing directors. Workshops, which are offered and organised by youngpp, inland and in foreign countries, have proven to be a perfect means to continuously educate myself and deepen my knowledge. My focus lies - and I am specialised - in portrait, beauty, wedding, fashion and nude photography in studio and on location.

Already since the introduction of the Olympus E-10, I have been taking pictures with Olympus cameras and I am very contented. From the very beginning, Olympus was the first to design a mirror reflex system for digital photography, where lenses are perfectly sensor adjustable.
In contrast to the competitors, who stated at the beginning that old analogue lenses could be used without any difficulties even though the digital sensor of the cameras has different requirements to the lenses, as film had back in “analogue times”. Another advantage is that the Olympus D-SLRs are smaller and thus more lightweight than the competitors’ products.

Of course, the integrated image stabiliser needs mentioning, which successfully stabilises all lenses. Furthermore, Olympus has the most effective dust reduction system (ultrasonic dust filter), which makes my life as a photographer a lot easier and was – by the way, invented by Olympus. Also Live View and the fold-out display are in some situations very helpful – once more, Olympus provided pioneer work.

Currently, I am working with the Olympus E-3 in addition with different bright lenses. The E-3 is very robust and lies perfectly in one’s hand. I would never give it away - except for an E-4.
